Both the Democratic and Republican parties are watching an important race where two Republicans, of which both are conservative, are hoping they can unseat the incumbent, a Democrat who is seeking a seventh term in Congress as a representative from eastern Long Island.
State Senator Lee Zeldin will face off against George Demos a former lawyer for the Securities and Exchange Commission, who is attempting to win the 1st Congressional seat for the third time.
The Tuesday primary winner faces Timothy Bishop the Democratic incumbent who is a former provost.
The spokesperson said the Republican Party campaign committee would reserve $1.1 million in TV time for advertisements to support either Demos or Zeldin.
Over $1.2 million has been spent thus far on the primary for the GOP by super PACs that are attempting to show the opposition as being too liberal to receive support from the Republicans.
These PACs have used $380,300 against Demos and $854,250 against Zeldin.
Zeldin is supported by a local county organization and welcomed last week Eric Cantor the outgoing Majority Leader in the House at a fundraiser in the Hamptons.
Demos, ran in 2010 and 2012, and has received the support of George Pataki the former Governor of New York and Rudolph Giuliani the former Mayor of New York City; both have done recorded television ads for Demos.
Demos at one time was an enforcement attorney for the SEC for 7 years between 2002 and 2009. He worked as a member of the prosecution team in the Bernard Madoff case.
Zeldin is currently serving in the New York state Senate in his second term of two-years. He is a veteran of the Army and served his country in Iraq.
