Advocacy groups realized that the White House is still not ready to listen to them. This is when President Barack Obama announced last June that Congress would allocate $500 million for the National Guard so that they could tighten the security at the borders of Mexico. As a result, some of these advocacy groups have to think again about the new strategies as soon as possible.
Because of this, the advocacy groups and community workers gathered together for at least two days so they could talk about what went wrong. At the same time, civil rights campaigners participated as well. All of them gave their ideas in search for their new plan. The community centers in San Diego also gathered last weekend as well.
According to Andrea Guerrero, the American Civil Liberties Union policy director in San Diego, they had a wide array of summit last time. The series of sessions allowed them to come together and thought of ways on how they could think more plans and new strategies.
Thanks to the current anti-immigration law imposed strictly at the state of Arizona, these groups tried to become more strategizing so that they can debate better regarding the immigration policies.
There were about 45 delegates that came in San Diego. Some of these delegates came from California, New Mexico, Texas, and of course Arizona. The main agenda is to talk about how they could counter Barack Obama’s message on how the government could become stricter in implementing tighter security measures. This includes the 1,200 National Guards and about more than 1,000 border agents.
At this point, the delegates know for a fact that their objective, which is the all-embracing immigration reform, is not likely to be heard by the Congress this 2010 or the next. They even joked that Obama’s administration is more like George W. Bush’s and even more.
