Can Immigrants Trust Obama
Immigrants are now asking whether they can trust President Barack Obama or not. The president has already deported people at a higher rate than any other in the history of the nation. A lot of immigrants, legal and otherwise watched President Obama announce his policy on immigration Tuesday.
People were excited when President Obama first spoke about immigration. They believed that the president would make significant changes in the immigration policy during his first term but he failed to follow through with his pledge.
Because of this, a lot of immigrants learned to keep their hopes in check because of the years without action during Obama’s first term. Life for immigrants was also hard. More than 1.4 million people have been deported since Obama became president. It was the fastest rate than under any other administration.
The federal government has continued to work with local law enforcement that uses immigration laws to intimidate immigrant communities and racially profile Latinos. One case in point is Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Immigration detention centers continue to treat their detainees inhumanely, especially those with mental health problems, medical illnesses, and those who are gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual.
Undocumented workers are targeted by the Department of Homeland Security. Operations by the agency led to the detention of workers, including day laborers who were detained while looking for work.
Undocumented people who have no criminal record, people who are not a threat to the safety of the country, and those working to support their families are deported even if there are prosecutorial discretion policies.
The good news is that there are some significant policies implemented under the Obama administration. One of which is the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The president’s Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors or DREAM Act failed to get the approval of Congress.
