Congress is being urged by President Barack Obama to rescind the ban on gays and lesbians openly serving in the military. However, both Republican opponents and Democratic allies are having problems with his approach to this issue. The President’s attempt to take away the “don’t ask, don’t tell” motto is being met with resistance from both Congress and the Pentagon.
Many top Pentagon officials have rigidly supported this policy from the Clinton administration. However, on Thursday the Pentagon announced that it will do all it can to do as the President desires. Already, top leaders in the military are working on a way to repeal the law and how it would begin in the Defense Department. This news came from Navy Captain John Kirby who is the spokesman for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen.
Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon Press Secretary, says that next week the Defense Department will finally make public how the ban would be lifted and allow gays to serve openly in the military. This is what President Obama has requested. Morrell went on to say that this issue was studied for a year and is now ready to be discussed openly with the Senate Armed Services Committee. This will take place next Tuesday.
