A suspect in case of sexual misconduct at the Citadel worked at one time for the campaign of Rick Santorum, as an aide. He also did advance work on the campaign for Mitt Romney, according to an email from the Citadel.

The internal email said that a 23-year old graduate of Citadel is accused of mistreating two fellow cadets, who are females, while he was at the military academy. The two female cadets filled reports with the police last week against Steven Munoz, who was a 2011 graduate.

One of the two cadets said in the police report that she was harassed by the suspect in 2010 when she was a freshman, while the other cadet alleged that three incidents with the suspect involved him assaulting and groping her. She said all three incidents took place in February of 2011.

A statement released by the Citadel says that the school was giving notice of two reports it had recently received regarding a graduate. The reports, said the school’s statement, allege that the suspect, while a cadet, had inappropriate contact with two female cadets that was sexual in nature.

The alleged assaults occurred more than 18 months ago and their circumstances suggest the assailant used his authority to get the victims close to him, said the school statement.

The office of Senator Rick Santorum refused to comment on the allegations, as did the campaign headquarters for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Munoz was in charge of the advance team for the presidential campaign of Senator Santorum and received payments from Romney’s campaign for Event Consulting in June and July.
