The conservative legal foundation of the James Madison Center for Free Speech approached federal regulators on Wednesday regarding certain campaign restrictions. They requested that unions and corporations be allowed to start spending company money to influence congressional elections this year.
They requested that the Federal Election Commission formally toss its rules that currently restrict unions and corporations when it comes to political spending. The Commission states that this step is necessary in implementing the Supreme Court’s decision made last week which would allow these groups to be more involved directly with election campaigns.
According to the attorney for the Center, James Bopp, the First Amendment rights of political speech will be exercised by the speakers, and this will be done in the way it was explained in the decision made last week. It is for this reason that the Center feels these regulations should be adopted quickly by the Federal Election Commission.
With campaigning beginning soon, this is an issue that needs to be sorted and sorted quickly so that it is clear to everyone just what the rules now are that will be governing this type of political spending. The Center will most likely not be the only group that will be approaching this matter.
