The campaign of Mitt Romney hired the former campaign manager for Rick Santorum on Thursday. Mike Biundo was hired as the Romney campaign attempts to attract additional support from the country’s conservatives.

Ryan Williams a spokesman for Romney said he contacted Biundo one day after Santorum exited the race on April 10. Biundo spoke to Santorum before accepting the offer to get his approval. Biundo was introduced to politics in New Hampshire and it is the same place he met Williams, also a former political operative in New Hampshire.

Romney has still not been officially endorsed by Santorum, though the Pennsylvania Senator said in an interview on TV earlier in the week that he would support Romney as the Republican Party presidential nominee. Backing from Santorum will help the ex-Governor of Massachusetts gain some legitimacy with those who consider themselves as very conservative voters.

Those voters were crucial to all 11 victories Santorum enjoyed in his GOP bid for the nomination. They also have been one group of constituencies that have been most resistant to choosing Romney as the standard bearer for the Party. Having Biundo in the fold will certainly help Romney with the conservative voters.

Biundo said he will be the deputy director of all coalition plus he will be courting the conservative voters. That will include getting support from tea party activists, pro-abortion advocates, gun owners and evangelical Christians.

Williams said that Romney’s decision to hire Biundo is another indication he is trying to unite the Republican Party to defeat Obama in November.
