Obama Supporters Attend Gay Pride Weekend
Obama campaign volunteers are seen mingling with the crowd in the gay pride weekend celebrations at Greenwich Village last Sunday. Hundreds of Obama field staff members and volunteers are see at the gay pride events across the country to get names, cellphone numbers, email, and home addresses. They are also told by the Chicago campaign headquarters to get commitments to volunteer.
There are gay pride parades that are confused for Obama campaign rallies. In Chicago, 300 of the president’s campaign staff members and volunteers walked down Halsted Street with chants of “Four more years!”
At Fifth Avenue in New York, a group composing of around 200 Obama supporters walked the parade route with placards stating L.G.B.T. for Obama. It refers to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. The onlookers shouted Obama’s name.
Gay men and lesbians have always voted for Democrats in recent elections. They support Democrats over Republicans by three to one. The Obama campaign want to continue the momentum it generated six weeks ago when President Obama declared his support for gay marriages. This strengthened his hold among gay people. Before he announced his support for same-sex marriage, some of Obama’s top gay donors had questioned his commitment with regards to issues involving the L.G.B.T. community.
Now Obama campaign officials and other top Democrats wants to convert the enthusiasm among gay men and lesbians for President Obama into more than just vote in the upcoming election. They can get people to not just vote for him but also be willing to do something for him.
For the next couple of weeks, Obama’s campaign will start calling those who signed its commitment forms to recruit them to be volunteers.
Gay pride marches are the Democratic Party’s equivalent of Tea Party rallies. It is an opportunity for President Obama to find more supportive voters in large, concentrated numbers.
