Viewers Love Romney More after First Debate
Republican candidate Mitt Romney got more love after the first presidential debate last Wednesday. President Barack Obama’s lackluster performance turned off viewers who have not been following the race so far.
According to polls made after the debate, Romney was the winner last Wednesday. It was not because he was consistent, clearly stated his position on issues, or factually correct. It was because he was more alert and energetic on stage compared to President Obama, who looks like he was having a bad night and didn’t put up any defense.
Romney remade himself last Wednesday. He has stepped away from the statement he made where he dismissed 47 percent of Americans as lazy freeloaders. The secretly recorded video made rounds earlier in the race that solidified Romney’s image as a billionaire who was out of touch with the middle class.
He said that 47 percent of Americans don’t pay income tax. He added that it was his job not to worry about those people. He said that they should take care of their own lives instead of depending on government handouts. Romney was criticized for his statements but he stood by them. He said that the remarks were not elegantly stated.
Romney must have realized that he can’t win the election by insulting half the population. There’s just five weeks before the presidential election. President Obama must do better in the next debate against his Republican rival.
Even Obama’s supporters were unhappy with their candidate’s performance during the debate. It felt like the president was sleepwalking while Romney was fully alert the whole time. President Obama was tedious to watch. It could have been better if he took his wife Michelle on an anniversary date and let Romney talk to an empty chair. Romney was energetic, concise and clear. President didn’t commit any mistakes but his omissions were obvious.
