The recent NPT (Non Proliferation Treaty) had five signatories, namely; US, Russia, China, Britain and France. Noticeably, among all five of them, the U.S. and Russia are the main sources of nuclear warheads because of the vast majority of weapons they have.

On the other side of the picture, we have three countries – Pakistan, India and Israel, who didn’t sign up for the NPT and that is why no one from their side showed up to represent them. Plus, these countries are known for secretly developing nuclear weapons and most of the times, they get by with a small slap on the wrist.

Iran is a unique case because it lies at the core of the entire NPT conference and yet again, the Iranian President (Ahmadinejad) is going to take part further discussions on nuclear power, until May 28th – New York. At one point, Iran openly admits the possession of nuclear warheads but they also openly deny those “requests” that are made through negotiations, pertaining to calling it quits with their nuclear weapons program.

Israel and Pakistan are not members of the NPT, but they’re both strengthening their nuclear assets so that potential threats can be held back. Pakistan is threatened by the Sunni Militants and Israel is under pressure/threat by Syrians and some Muslim parties. This phenomenon is known as; being prepared for the unexpected, according to one’s own fears.

The last 2005 NPT conference ended without any final decisions and this time, some countries have high hopes that they’re all going to hit a proper solution or some sort of decision. Let us wait, till May 28th and see what unfolds in the coming days.

After Israel welcomed the decision for peace talks with the Palestinians, things are finally getting back on track now. Mark Regev, (Israel Government spokesman) said that the only way of solving out problems is to sit down around a table and discuss things in a healthy environment. This would be far better than hurling stones, screaming obscenities and firing bullets at different protestors.

The issues rose when the Israeli occupation forces announced a housing project in East Jerusalem, to which Palestinians got all flared up and said that it was an illegal move on behalf of Israel because they’re constructing buildings on Palestinian land.

Palestinian legislator, Hanan Ashrawi says that Israel will have to abandon its construction project for Jerusalem and anywhere around Jerusalem. Only then, we can sit down and talk about things in a mutual manner. (But that’s not going to happen Ashrawi, we already know that so it is more of a wishful thinking on your behalf). Although, the peace talks are expected to last for 4 months but there are chances that the conference will be called off earlier due to the restless nature of both sides.

The next big nuclear weapons related meeting is due on May 3 to May 28 and right now, the non proliferation engine of the United States is shuddering restlessly, potentially holding a risk of choking itself in a truckload of contradictions.

Contradictions have nailed South Asia is one of the biggest issues in the nuclear conference, since, China has been planning on selling nuclear reactors to Pakistan, potentially disregarding the overall views of the Nuclear Power Suppliers Group.

Ellen Tauscher – Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security believes that we haven’t weakened the NPT in any sort of peaceful civilian nuclear deals with India. The Indo-U.S. deal is just something which adds to the security and non-proliferation plans that have been set up prior to these things.

But once again, she was quick enough to avoid any sort of questions which might point out that the U.S would be responsible for something “unusual” and “unexpected”, by saying that it isn’t our fault if something bad happens because we only want a strong NPT and an IAEA, that is well funded and authorities need to pay attention to it.

In regards to the nuclear deal between Pakistan and China, she said that we are making efforts in convincing the country to step away and let our program do its intended work – otherwise it is going to be a set of long negotiations and arguments.

Since Israel already didn’t sign up for any sort of commitments towards the NPT, so no one bothered to show up from that side (that’s called future proofing and long term planning). Tauscher said that Israel has no qualms about inquiries regarding its nuclear assets but first we need to get all other countries under one roof and resume peace talks before it’s too late (she meant to say that other nuclear power countries need to disarm themselves and only then IF possible, Israel will think of lowering its warheads).

Once again, the agenda for this conference is the age old topic, i.e. The possession of Nuclear Weapons – Is it Safe or Risky?

Some folks can say one thing for sure, Westerners expect minor countries to give up their nuclear assets while maintaining a blind eye towards Israel’s nuclear weapons (and why would they stop Israel from making Nuclear Weapons? Jewish lobbies have a major portion in the U.S. economy, so Israel can get away easily with anything that deems fit).

The 1970 arms control treaty is intended towards stopping the production of nuclear warheads and originally, this treaty applied equally to all those counties in possession of nuclear power. But the last conference in 2005 was a total disaster and it reached a dead end, without any major conclusions.

Things are expected to be different and much better this time, in the upcoming conference and it is believed that a new life can be given to the old treaty (which apparently failed in stopping North Korea from building nuclear weapons). Like Indian and Pakistan, Israel also hasn’t signed up for the conference so none of these 3 countries will be showing up.

The special (and out of the blue) dispatching of George Mitchell to the Mideast is seen as a sign of improvement towards the indirect peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Since the recent American-Israeli spat over a new Jewish construction, people are beginning to assume that the so called “much awaited proximity talks” are going to follow some comprehension towards the Jerusalem construction.

Jerusalem is an extremely charged and emotional issue so it is being saved up for the “final discussion” phases. “Neither can it be ignored, nor can we let it go”, said Martin Indyk – the U.S. Ambassador to Israelis. Jerusalem city officials made announcements for a new housing authority which will be spreading over 1600 units and these intentions were disclosed during the recent visit by President Joe Biden. However, the Israeli Prime Minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) was unaware of the timings of the project and it kind of fed speculations that Israeli forces are “hesitant” towards resuming talks.

Since the matter has come down to Jerusalem, Indyk is of the view that for the time being, no good can pop out of useless focus on Jerusalem. Indyk’s points of views were also voiced by the former U.S. Ambassador – Sam Lewis, saying that the idea of deferring Jerusalem to the last final phases of “peace” talks has lost its moment. Now we have to find a way to bring it in.

Some politicians believe that resumption of “peace” talks are all dependent on the construction issue in Jerusalem. But Indyk, however, wants Israelis to build Jewish buildings on Jewish lands and Arab buildings on Arab lands. But this decision, in return will sort of give a “holy basin” look to the whole construction project. The process has to be discussed and it is of crucial importance for those peace talks.

For the sake of Israel’s security and secrecy, a sense of ambiguity was maintained – said an atomic program minister on last Wednesday.

The good thing which minister Ayalon believes is that there was no pressure on Israel from the US against nuclear weapons safeguarding and neither did Israel make any demands at the summit.

Israel has clearly mentioned that it will consider “giving up with the nuclear weapons programs: AFTER the rest of the countries have ceased to develop nuclear weapons of their own (yeah like this is ever going to happen and we all know it that it won’t).

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu didn’t show up at the summit and the Maariv newspaper stated down that Netanyahu was actually pleased by not having to show up. Maybe he believed that by not showing up, he wouldn’t be giving any participant, any chance of thinking about Israel’s nuclear programs for a while.

Statistics reveal that Israel has a huge arsenal of hundreds of Nuclear Warheads and they’ve been saving them up since the year of 1965. Washington also, on the other hand, hasn’t been able to inquire Israel about their nuclear programs. Looks like there’s a huge conspiracy going on and the public needs to be aware of that.
