ECARX Targets Global Growth With AI, Silicon and Automaker Partnerships

ECARX (NASDAQ:ECX) executives outlined the automotive technology supplier’s global expansion strategy, product portfolio and financial targets during a JPMorgan conference session, highlighting partnerships with major automakers and continued investment in software, silicon and artificial intelligence capabilities.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer Ziyu Shen said ECARX provides a full-stack computing system for vehicles, including hardware, system-on-chip technology, middleware and software. The company’s objective is to offer automakers a one-stop solution that can simplify research and development for software-defined vehicles, he said.

Chief Operating Officer Peter Cirino said the company has systems deployed in more than 12 million vehicles. He pointed to ECARX’s automotive delivery experience, silicon expertise through SiEngine, and software capabilities associated with Flyme OS as important components of its technology stack. ECARX has announced its intention to acquire the Flyme OS business, which provides an operating system and ecosystem for mobile devices and vehicles in China.

Customer Base and Global Footprint

Shen identified Geely as an important customer in China, alongside FAW Group. He also cited programs with Dongfeng, Chery and other Chinese domestic automakers. Outside China, he said ECARX has programs or partnerships involving Volkswagen Group, Renault, Volvo Cars, Polestar and Mercedes-Benz.

Volkswagen announced two technology product partnerships with ECARX last year, according to Shen. He said one program, described as a Global Entry Infotainment Program, supports Volkswagen’s MQB vehicle platform and is expected to enter start of production in the third and fourth quarters.

The company has established a global engineering presence to support automakers locally. Shen said ECARX has roughly 800 to 900 research and development employees in China, around 200 employees in Europe, and about 150 people across East and Southeast Asia. Its European operations include sites in Gothenburg, Sweden, to support Volvo Cars; Stuttgart, Germany, for German automakers; and a London headquarters.

ECARX also has a joint venture with Proton and a research and development center in Vietnam, Shen said. The company ships about 200,000 computing units annually to Proton, according to his remarks.

Competition, Product Integration and Cost

Shen described Huawei as a major competitor in China, while naming Harman, Samsung, LG, Aptiv and Visteon among competitors in international markets. Cirino said ECARX also competes in some areas with Qualcomm, though he described Qualcomm as a close partner and said ECARX delivers systems using Qualcomm technology.

The executives said ECARX’s vertical integration is intended to support both product performance and cost efficiency. Shen said the company can choose among in-house chips, Qualcomm technology and MediaTek technology depending on program requirements.

He highlighted a centralized product architecture that can integrate functions including surround-view cameras, parking systems, front-view systems, high-fidelity audio, gateways and vehicle diagnostic services into one computing box. Cirino said software-defined vehicle designs reduce the number of electronic control units in a vehicle, potentially simplifying the vehicle network while improving cost efficiency for automakers.

Cirino added that ECARX’s experience in China, where automakers operate at a particularly rapid development pace, helps the company deliver products more quickly while maintaining quality.

Revenue Outlook and Investment Priorities

Shen said ECARX’s revenue was about one-quarter of its current level three to four years ago and described a fourfold increase since its 2022 Nasdaq listing. He said the company had recently updated its revenue guidance to $1.1 billion to $1.2 billion, with gross margin around 20% in the second quarter. He also said the company had achieved adjusted EBITDA profitability for four consecutive quarters.

Cirino later cited second-quarter revenue of $225 million, up more than 40% year over year, and said gross margin was nearly 20%, approximately double the prior-year level. He gave a full-year revenue target of $1 billion to $1.1 billion, a range that differed from Shen’s earlier comments.

Looking ahead, Shen said the company intends to invest in global expansion, localization and future technologies, including AI silicon, AI software and AI tools. He said ECARX expects launches in Latin America in the third and fourth quarters, a European launch the following year, and potential India activity in 2029 or 2030.

Shen said the company seeks to keep research and development operating expenses at 7% to 10% over the next three to five years, while using revenue growth to support R&D investment. He also said ECARX is open to raising capital from strategic investors that can support regional expansion or technology development.

Autonomous Driving and Sensor Partnerships

ECARX is also expanding its work in vehicle sensors and autonomous driving. Shen said the company aims to offer both computing systems and sensor systems, including solutions ranging from entry-level infotainment to higher-performance AI computing platforms.

He said ECARX has announced a LiDAR partnership and plans to use contract manufacturing in Thailand through TPK rather than making major capital investments in its own manufacturing capacity. The company believes integrating sensors more closely with computing systems can simplify data flows and vehicle connections.

Separately, Shen said ECARX has signed an agreement with Ann Arbor, Michigan-based May Mobility to develop computing and sensor systems for Level 4 autonomous vehicle platforms. May Mobility is expected to purchase base vehicles and computing systems from ECARX for robotaxi operations, he said.
