Ballard (NASDAQ: BLDP) plans up to $120 million for HPU fleet buildout

What happened

Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: BLDP) said Oct. 22, 2026, that it held the Ballard Forum in Vancouver, BC.

The company plans to spend $80 million to $120 million in capital expenditures to expand its Hydrogen Power Unit fleet.

Ballard said the pace of that spending has optionality.

It expects asset-backed financing at greater than 80% loan to value to fund the project and limit cash outlay.

The release says there is no immediate need to invest in manufacturing expansion or hydrogen production.

Ballard also said its business model has expanded to include Energy-as-a-Service alongside equipment sales and services.

The company is targeting a 30% compound annual growth rate in corporate revenue over the next two fiscal years.

Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that Ballard only works if heavy-duty customers adopt fuel cells at commercial scale and unit economics turn positive before the balance-sheet runway is consumed.

The filing adds a clear spending range and medium-term operating goals, so that test is easier to track.

The $40 million gap between the low and high end gives management room to pace spending.

Ballard is targeting a 30% compound annual growth rate in corporate revenue over the next two fiscal years, gross margins above 20% in 2027 and above 25% by 2028.

It is also targeting adjusted EBITDA profitability by the end of 2027 and full-year profitability throughout 2028.

Cash use for operating costs is expected to fall over time as margins and revenue rise.

The main caveat is that every operating goal is forward-looking and the spending pace can change.

The release leaves the case mixed because it sets spending and profitability targets, and the balance-sheet question still depends on delivery against them.

What's next

The next dated milestones are adjusted EBITDA profitability by the end of 2027 and full-year profitability throughout 2028.

Ballard says gross margins should exceed 20% in 2027 and rise above 25% by 2028.

Hitting those marks would strengthen the case that the company can scale while keeping cash use in check.

Missing them would leave the investment case dependent on targets rather than results.
