Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO) lifts capital release past $2 billion on third-quarter progress

What happened

Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited (NYSE: RIO) said it has achieved more than $2 billion of capital release year-to-date.

The company said that work is part of a $5 billion to $10 billion capital release program announced at Capital Markets Day 2025.

Rio Tinto also said further announcements are expected in 2026 as it delivers the initial ~$5 billion of the program.

The company said it signed an agreement with Yindjibarndi WaterCo in July for the proposed sale of the Dampier Seawater Desalination Plant in Western Australia.

It also said the sale of land in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada, to LNG Canada for Phase II is agreed and expected to complete in Q4.

Rio Tinto added that it entered a non-binding arrangement for a lithium sales contract with a pre-payment component and completed several smaller non-core asset disposals.

Simon Trott said third-quarter operational performance was strong.

Trott said Oyu Tolgoi copper production rose 29% year-to-date, with the operation running at a ~450 kt annualised rate in the quarter.

He also said global iron ore sales were up 3% year-to-date, and Simandou hit a ~10 Mtpa annualised production run-rate in the quarter.

Production, sales and unit-cost guidance were unchanged.

Why it matters

The capital-release total already covers at least 40% of the initial ~$5 billion target.

That matters because Rio Tinto's case rests on turning large, long-life assets into cash flow that funds reinvestment and shareholder returns.

The filing also says completion and cash receipt still depend on binding agreements and conditions precedent.

The operating update points the same way.

Oyu Tolgoi and Simandou both moved higher, and Rio Tinto kept production, sales and unit-cost guidance unchanged.

This makes the quarter a progress report on the current plan, not a reset.

What's next

The next dated item is completion of the Kitimat land sale in Q4.

Rio Tinto also said further capital-release announcements are expected in 2026 as it works through the initial ~$5 billion program.

It also said it remains on track for a $1.8 billion annualised productivity benefit run-rate by the end of 2026.

A completed Q4 close and more announced disposals would support the cash-release story, while any delay would push cash receipts later.
