NXP (NASDAQ: NXPI) revenue jumps 19% and the board expands buyback authority

What happened

NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ: NXPI) reported third-quarter revenue of $3.79 billion, up 19% from a year earlier. Revenue also rose 8% from the second quarter's $3.50 billion, and the board expanded its share repurchase authorization.

For holders, the quarter is evidence that demand in NXP's automotive and industrial markets is recovering. Rafael Sotomayor, NXP's president and chief executive, tied the results to growing contributions from company-specific drivers in automotive and industrial, plus continued strength in data center infrastructure.

Earnings grew faster than sales. GAAP diluted earnings per share were $3.48, up 40% from $2.48 a year earlier. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $4.20, up 35% from $3.11. The non-GAAP figures leave out items such as acquisition-related amortization, share-based compensation and restructuring charges.

Where the growth came from

Growth was broad but not universal. Compared with a year earlier, Industrial IoT revenue rose 39% to $802 million, and communications infrastructure and other revenue rose 54% to $503 million. Automotive, the largest segment, grew 13% to $2.07 billion. Mobile slipped 4% to $411 million.

Channel inventory stood at 11 weeks, unchanged from the second quarter and up from 9 weeks a year earlier. The filing also notes an Aug. 4 announcement that the BMW Group will use NXP's Trimension ultra-wideband ranging and radar solutions across its fleet, starting with selected 2026 vehicle programs.

Cash flow and the buyback

Free cash flow more than doubled from a year earlier, to $1.21 billion from $509 million. Operating cash flow was $1.26 billion and net capital spending was $50 million. That left free cash flow at 31.9% of revenue. Over the trailing twelve months it was 25% of revenue, up from 16% a year earlier.

NXP returned $359 million to shareholders in the quarter, equal to 29.8% of free cash flow. Dividends were $256 million and buybacks were $103 million. In October, after quarter end, the board authorized a new $5 billion repurchase program on top of the $1.3 billion left under the prior one. Those are ceilings on future buybacks, not money spent.

Net financial leverage fell to 1.3 times trailing adjusted EBITDA from 1.8 times a year earlier. NXP also broke ground on Aug. 12 on an assembly and test site expansion in Malaysia. On Sept. 28, VSMC, its joint venture with Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation, opened its first 300mm fab in Singapore.

Why it matters

OptimistFi has argued that NXP works if the 2024-2025 decline was a cyclical digestion in auto and industrial chips, not a sign that its long-cycle sockets and pricing power are eroding. This quarter strengthens that view. Revenue growth and a higher GAAP gross margin, 57.8% against 56.3% a year earlier, are what a cyclical recovery would look like.

The guidance tempers the read. NXP expects fourth-quarter revenue of $3.75 billion to $3.95 billion, a change of -1% to 4% from the third quarter and 12% to 18% from a year earlier. Even the top of that range is a slower sequential gain than the third quarter delivered. The low end would be a small step down. Mobile revenue also remains below its year-earlier level.

What's next

NXP holds a conference call at 4:30 p.m. EDT on Oct. 27 to review the third-quarter results.

The next test is the fourth-quarter report. NXP guides GAAP diluted earnings per share of $3.36 to $3.79 and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of $4.14 to $4.58. Revenue at or above the top of the guided range would back the recovery case. A result below the low end would weaken it. Last quarter's buyback pace is the baseline for how fast NXP uses the new authorization.
