Generac (NYSE: GNRC) books record sales as data-center demand lifts C&I 28%

What happened

Generac Holdings Inc. (NYSE: GNRC) reported a record third quarter, with net sales up 16% to $1.29 billion from $1.11 billion a year earlier.

Where the growth came from

C&I external net sales rose about 28% to $552 million from $432 million. Generac said the segment's core growth came mainly from ramping revenue on products sold into the global data center market. Broad international growth was offset by lower shipments to the domestic industrial distributor and telecom channels.

The segment's adjusted EBITDA was $69.3 million, or 12.5% of total sales, up from $43.8 million, or 10.1%. Generac credited operating leverage on higher shipments and the net favorable effect of acquisitions and divestitures.

Residential external net sales rose about 9% to $743 million from $682 million. Generac said home standby and portable generators drove the gain, while energy storage shipments fell. CEO Aaron Jagdfeld tied the rebound to mega-trends around lower power quality. Segment adjusted EBITDA reached $200.8 million, or 27.0% of sales, versus 23.4% a year earlier.

Margins, taxes and cash

Gross margin widened to 39.9% from 38.3% a year earlier. Generac said the gain came mainly from favorable price/cost, including lower tariff costs, partly offset by unfavorable sales mix.

Operating expenses rose $31.6 million, or 10%. Generac spent to support future C&I growth and on marketing, incentive compensation and intangible amortization. Expenses grew more slowly than sales.

The effective tax rate rose to 23.9% from 15.0% because favorable one-time tax items last year did not repeat. Cash generation improved. Operating cash flow was $171 million versus $118 million. Free cash flow was $132 million versus $96 million, helped by higher operating earnings and partly offset by higher capital spending.

Why it matters

Generac said it entered an agreement with Amazon.com, Inc. that includes a long-term supply deal for backup power generators for Amazon data centers. Initial deliveries are expected to total $2.4 billion in 2027 and 2028. With other wins from new and existing customers, Generac said its data-center backlog has grown to approximately $4.5 billion.

OptimistFi has argued that Generac works as a resiliency-and-distributed-energy compounder only if its brand, manufacturing scale and dealer network keep turning grid unreliability into profitable demand, rather than a post-boom generator cycle. The Residential rebound, wider margins in both segments and the new backlog support that view. The quarter strengthens the case.

The growth is not all organic. Acquisitions, divestitures and foreign currency added 1% to total sales growth and about 4% to C&I segment sales growth. Generac's adjusted figures also exclude $20.17 million of legal, regulatory and other charges that it says do not reflect ongoing operations. That includes $14.29 million tied to clean energy warranty matters.

Generac also lists risks in contracts with certain data center customers, including cancellation rights, delivery requirements and potential liability. It also cites uncertainty over data-center market growth.

What's next

Generac kept its full-year 2026 net sales growth guidance in the mid-to-high teens percent range. That includes an approximate 2% favorable effect from foreign currency, acquisitions and divestitures. It also kept net income margin guidance of approximately 9.0% to 10.0%. The adjusted EBITDA margin outlook is now approximately 20.5% to 21.0%, up at the bottom from 20.0% to 21.0%.

The next quarterly report is the test. Continued C&I growth and a rising backlog, with steady Residential margins, would support the case. Slower C&I sales growth or a backlog below this quarter's level would weaken it. Generac said it continues to carry out its announced capacity expansion plans for the data center market.
