Pinnacle West (NYSE: PNW) raises earnings outlook as weather-adjusted sales climb 9.5%

What happened

Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (NYSE: PNW) raised its 2026 earnings guidance to $5.05 to $5.25 per diluted share on Nov. 3. The Arizona utility cited customer and sales growth and weather through the first three quarters.

Third-quarter net income attributable to common shareholders rose to $434.2 million, or $3.49 per diluted share, from $413.2 million, or $3.39, a year earlier. That is a gain of $21.0 million, or 5.1%, while earnings per share rose 2.9%.

The company said higher customer sales and usage, favorable weather and customer growth drove the gain. Higher depreciation and amortization and interest charges offset part of it.

The demand behind the quarter

Weather-normalized retail sales grew 9.5% in the quarter, against 5.4% in the third quarter of 2025. Commercial and industrial sales rose 14.5% and residential sales 4.5%. Customer growth was 1.8%, including 1.9% for residential customers.

APS set an all-time peak demand of 9,166 MW on Aug. 2, topping last year's peak of 8,648 MW. Demand exceeded 9,000 MW on three occasions, and APS passed the old peak a dozen times. Residential cooling degree days were up 3% from the same period in 2025.

The presentation looks further out. It puts committed load at 5.8 GW, with more than 84% not yet served. It guides 2026 weather-normalized sales growth of 8.0% to 10.0%, including 5.0% to 7.0% from new large manufacturing facilities and several large data centers.

What the per-share bridge shows

The presentation's per-share bridge shows how little of the sales gain reached the bottom line. Sales and usage added $0.35 a share and weather added $0.09, together $0.44, against a $0.10 rise in EPS. A larger share count took away $0.07.

The bridge also lists $0.03 for net income attributable to the noncontrolling interest. A footnote links it to the purchase and end of two of the three Palo Verde VIE lease agreements. Changes in depreciation and amortization and O&M expense mostly offset it.

Palo Verde buyout and the funding plan

The presentation lists an investment of about $200 million on a buyout option for nearly 100 MW of nuclear capacity previously under sale-leaseback. It also lists about $500 million of added Palo Verde capital spending over the next 10 years.

APS capital spending totals $10.35 billion for 2025 through 2028, before a Cholla gas conversion expected to cost up to about $440 million. Pinnacle West's financing plan includes a new equity need of $1.0 billion to $1.2 billion. About $920 million of that is priced under equity forwards through October 2026.

Pinnacle West also started a new at-the-market equity program, with about $235 million already priced. Guidance for 2026 interest expense, net of allowance for funds used during construction, is $410 million to $430 million.

Why it matters

OptimistFi has argued that Pinnacle West compounds only if Phoenix-area load growth and rate-base investment are recovered through constructive regulation faster than financing costs and regulatory lag absorb the benefit. The quarter supports the growth half of that view, with strong sales and a higher outlook.

The recovery half is still open. In the pending rate case, APS asked for a net revenue increase of $609 million and a 10.70% return on equity. ACC staff recommended 9.55% to 9.80%, a range that starts at the return now in rates. The presentation estimates a final decision in December 2026.

The quarter has caveats. Part of the gain came from weather, which does not reflect load growth. Higher depreciation, interest and share count absorbed much of the sales gain, which is the pattern OptimistFi's case warns about.

What's next

Management's call at 11 a.m. ET (9 a.m. Arizona time) on Nov. 3 covers the results and an update on the long-term financial outlook. The presentation also lists the ACC's final nuclear workshop on Nov. 19 and a 2026 lost fixed cost recovery adjustment effective Dec. 1 if approved.

The rate case decision, estimated for December 2026, is the main test. A return closer to APS's request would favor the case. One at the low end of staff's range would show regulatory lag still absorbing growth. The presentation says dates are tentative and subject to change.
